This project examines moments of women’s unrest in early modern Istanbul, with a particular focus on food protest. It investigates when, how, and under what circumstances women challenged authority at times of crisis. By reconstructing and contextualising these cases, the project seeks to uncover how women’s actions have been repeatedly overlooked or silenced in historical narratives.
Bringing together food history and gender history, the project also reflects critically on Ottoman historiography and its source traditions. It explores how and why women’s unrest has been marginalised in Ottoman history and what this silencing reveals about historical sources and archival practices.
