Women and Urban Unrest in Early Modern Istanbul
This project examines moments of women’s unrest in early modern Istanbul, with a particular focus on food protest. It investigates when, how, and under what circumstances women challenged authority at times of crisis. By reconstructing and contextualizing these cases, the project seeks to uncover how women’s action have been repeatedly overlooked or silenced in historical narratives.
Bringing together food history and gender history, the project also reflects critically on Ottoman historiography and its source traditions. It explores how and why women’s unrest has been marginalized in Ottoman history and what this silencing reveals about historical sources and archival practices.
